WASP: A short film you would kill to run away from.


As I would say ‘Try not get stung, otherwise it would be a permanent visual in your mind’

WASP: Worst Artistic Short Production.

This short film had established itself in 2003, where the creativity was fuelled by Andrea Arnold. It is set in the deprived suburban area of Dartford. It is revolved around a disgusting young mother, Zoe, who has four children. We first view these characters descending a flight of stairs to encounter the supposed /Arch-Nemesis’ of the protagonist, to enable an altercation. This altercation is the first time, where we able to see how Zoe’s motherhood has greatly reflected on her children. The middle fingers and swears being thrown into the air, is not something I would recommend for the familiar demographic.

She is then reconciled with a crush from the times of her adolescence, David. It is quite the coincidence that this crush is in bearing of the same name as her ultimate celebrity crush,the legendary ‘David Beckham.’ This may imply in fact, she aspires to become the Victoria and become liberated from her poverty-stricken lifestyle (might I say that she has caused ,due to the constant decision of being dependent on her Ex-partner, that happened to be called Mark.) either that, or she plans to be extremely wealthy so she no longer has to care for her four minors. This makes me view her mentality to very immature and if she was shown in front of a vulnerable audience, our global issues with immensely increase.


Mark himself, is quite deprived, which we can visually see from his malfunctioning auto-mobile. This scene can be quite comedic, as he has successfully been able to encourage Zoe to go on a date, to a pub. Not the most romantic, but very realistic to the situation. This is one scene I can greatly appreciated, because it does show deprived residents in an empathetic light, which can appease to the audience but at the same time,It is quite the -rags-to-riches tale, without the riches in the end because it also shows that deprived residents are full of mental stupidity that barely give the cognate survival to keep on functioning and send messages to the neurons.


This scene we can exaggeratedly follow to the important part: The actual date. The scene of the mother, dressed in quite attention-seeking clothing racing with her children, it not a scene worth highlighting in detail. Although , it quite sweet that the motherly love is shown, I will have so many things to say about how she influences her children. Plus, that motherly love doesn’t accurately concede into the highlighted scene. This woman decides to prioritise her date , over her own vulnerable children. She decides to abandon them outside, because she was not truly honest to David, her date about her 4 children. Why should a mother become embarrassed of her own children to impress a man? Let alone this same man is obviously the agonising alpha male figure. The traditionalist who expects the female to bow at his feet because he is a man. It is shown when He expects her to get his drink and pay for it because she is a ‘bird.’ Bird is a colloquial term to refer to a sexually attractive woman. While she is accepting this and hanging out with her alpha man dream, The children are left with the bare minimum of dinner :crisps and food dropped from the floor. It is quite shameful to be a mother, if you can not have the means to prioritise the children over a date. So, my respect for the protagonist goes downhill from here.  She decides to follow David to his car and allows him to lead in to quite the sloppy and ‘cringey’ french kisses, which only lingered into something more… intimate, but without love being the priority. It was all lust in its darkest form. I understand that the scenes of sultry entertain people, but this is not entertaining. I guarantee that you will want to peel out your eyes if you saw this. It was greatly closed-up and widened, it made you think that you were in the back seat, but chained so you couldn’t disrupt the action. The thought of that shivers you.

It is only then that the tuned up sound of one of the children’s screams enable a practical epiphany of her exiting the car. Her rage is quite atrocious as she caused the one thing that could have caused her to face a lack of custody of her children : Her youngest infant being stung by a wasp in the middle of the night due to maternal ‘abandonment.’ The rage was the fact that the children were expected to look after the infant, without proper mature care…what an embarrassment. Pregnant teen mothers, do not look after your children like this. The only great result was that David found out the underlying truth. But, it didn’t cost her dearly. He bought Fish and Chips for the starving children, A British delicacy that they were craving.

The film can be viewed from many angles, positively and negatively. I viewed this film in quite the negative light, due to influence. Though I must credit that the plot was very well executed and if you want to risk being stung, take the leap.

Your Name (Kimi no nawa/君の名は。) : A psychological leap into fantasia.

‘Your Name’ is a quite modern-Japanese animation, that has gained a high reputation for being compared to one of the legendary academy winning movies :Spirited Away. That being said, it is very unique but the comparison is quite understandable as they are both films that raise high rank in those who watch it (of course not in everyone, due to preference). Though, I have quite the positive sight on this film alone.

The plot is centred on two characters: A boy who happens to be named Taki, who resides in Tokyo and Mitsuha, who resides in the Hida region of the Gifu prefecture. Mitsuha, happens to aspire to be able to live in the metropolis of Tokyo, as a teenage boy in her next life. Taki is the one chosen to fulfil Mitsuha’s desire.

The split first person narrative, gives an opportunity to understand two people, in a shared psychological body, despite being psychically two. The mind thoughts of the typical Japanese high school boy is manifested physically onto a traditionally raised Japanese high school girl (and vice versa) makes us see that our minds are capable of exploring the true parallels of each and every human, including ourselves. This film, widening our imaginative perspective of life. We are more interesting than we actually think ; it is only us that create such a mundane ambience in our heads and expressions. There have been extreme close ups on the different parts of the body that intricately define a cis-female and male. Long hair, to define traditional femininity, short wild hair to define physical masculinity, in a modern world.Though, this was in the beginning. It was only when Mitsuha, decided to cut off a ‘drastic’ amount of hair, is what we can say that it is our subconscious to make us to see that we are different, that who we are as human beings are stronger and more special and if allow ourselves to see a bigger picture, we will become so much more intelligent.

Eventually both characters became enamoured for each other , for who they were as people, not at the appearance of each other. It caused Taki to search for Mitsuha. It was only then where the tone drifted. The town at which Mitsuha resided in was hit by a giant comet 3 years prior to the ‘freaky Friday’ body switches. Only a basic human in the audience, with no imagination would say that Taki is making this up in his head. Yet, that is not true. the psychological message sent, via the close up of the tears shed, from his companions (very close friends of Taki , who assist him in finding Mitsuha) and his expressed anger and denial is so much more. Mitsuha acted as Taki’s safe haven. Although, Taki did not necessarily suffer through familiar issues or anything detrimental, Mitsuha, was the only one who understood ‘him.’ We all have a Mitsuha, it is the person who we embody that understands us for everything that we are,from our flaws, our admirations and our quirks, from the world of closed off minds and the unknown. Our ‘Mistuha’ keeps us sane, because they help us to express how we feel, internally. I say this as a person who does not prioritise emotion over logic, I am more of a thinker than a feeler, but as a human, I do feel negative sentiments.  But, Mitsuha, was real. We want our Mitsuhas’ to become real, so we can feel like we ‘belong.’ our Mitsuhas’ act as the ego, in psychoanalysis. They control us and prevent our from becoming monsters.

In compliance to Taki, Mitsuha, was real. He met her during his last year in Middle school. In terms of the psychological effect, Taki met his ego. Maybe Taki before was more extreme in behaviour, but we wouldn’t know the film doesn’t go deeper into that. But, it makes us think who they really are as people, before the life changing event.

What are the resources required for your film production (think about equipment, props, actors, location etc) 



Depending on the film, in project, some things are required more than others. In a typical live action film, The most important component that helps to shoot your film is the camera. It is the gateway lens for people to actually see your ideas expressed in a realistic medium. For example, when I was on set to shoot ‘The worst kind of people’ The camera shots, being a wide or a close-up, we were able to see the ideas of the director’s to create a specific atmosphere for the audience (i.e developed suspense). Though, without the camera, wide shots may have not been taken and we not be able to see the creativity of the team. If this were to apply to an animated film, the computer would be the key component, as it is where you receive the software to create artistic pictures for your audience to see and understand the major aesthetic. A Tim Burton film (e.g corpse bride) and a Hayao Miyazaki (e.g My neighbour Totoro) have different styles (obviously due to different artists) but the artwork can help give the audience a specific feel when watching the film.

In terms of acting, we would require actors, to an extent. If the film is a story line that consists of certain characters, then actors are obviously required. We would need to see the emphasis of the dialogue (if present) and how that may change our perception based on the genre, but also the appearance. Would two children in a film, with a truly deep topic, be intercepted as innocent? For example, the film ‘the boy in the striped pyjamas’ the two main characters were 8 year old boys, one who was not aware of the unjustifiable treatment of the Ashkenazim Jewish people , or Jewish people in general. The audience, may see the boy, as someone who been locked away from reality and so is very pure. If this same plot were to take place with two adult men, they audience would perceive the ignorant man, as an imbecile, because, many people would believe that the man should have more real world knowledge and should not require the anecdotal experience of his friend to immediately change his perception. In an animation, the rule of actors also applies. If it is a silent animation, no actors would be required , as it clearly based on the artwork to draw an atmosphere.

I would say, that wrong location can result in a detrimental domino effect. I will use an example. A stereotypical horror film that could have been shot on Halloween night, in Romania (a prime location for stereotypical horror) at 21:00, is located to be shot on July 10th , at 12:00, located at Venice beach, California. If the audience were to see the latter, it would not give the sense of stereotypical horror. Of course, I could argue that horror films, do not require typecasting and can happen anywhere, as long as the true message is expressed, If the film is advertised to be more suspenseful than it actually is, critics, may rate the film very low and the net profit may be lower than the budget. Location does help emphasise the plot of the film, as it connects us more to the character’s motives and actions and so, from there we can draw out more interpretations. Though, location is one of the requirements that both parties, of the film crew (the direction team and the location scouts) have to agree on, to maximise the film’s potential.



What is your key role and what are the skills and equipment required to fulfil it?

My key role, was really the stretch out of my comfort zone. I was assigned to become a production manager for one of the shoots (i.e spaghetti). It required a lot of skills, including the figuration of buying the suitable props and equipment required for each scene, to follow the prop list, to provide edibles for the crew. Though, one skill that is crucial is to stay within budget, as there are so many chances to overspend in correlation to satisfy the crew and maximise the potential of the scenes that make up the film. The budget was 30 pounds, which is not easy to reach with the prop list that we had. 4 cookbooks already would have reached a minimum of 20 pounds, two-thirds of the said budget. Luckily, we used the skills of compromising, for other members of the team to provide props that were available in the house. This reduced the potential of the budget, which meant that I had the ability to buy products and make products (i.e labels) to be in use for the filming. With this, we were able to buy snacks with over half of the money. One thing that I would have improved on, is to try and not spend on all the budget. If it were a feature film and the box office only gained 30 pounds, no profit would have been gained. This means money would not been gained in the process. I should try to minimise on the use of the budget, to maximise profitability.


What is your supporting role and what are the skills and equipment required to fulfil it?

When it came to shooting, I played two contrasting roles, depending on the shoot. On the first shoot (i.e The worst kind of People), I played the key role of being a focus puller/1st Assistant Camera. Focuses are quite important and create the most minimal difference in how the characters are portrayed. To receive the right focus, can create the biggest difference to the audience. This is due to that fact that low quality visuals can only give negative opinions to a film. This shows us that the focus must usually be sharp, to increase the quality and to truly show the performance. With this, the focus puller must have the sight to be able to notice the most suitable sharpness, using the manual focus, especially in wide shots. If the focus, is too blurry and very soft, in this type of sharp, no matter the resolution of the camera, it will not be seen as a suitable shot. This is due to the fact that you can not see the actors. When it comes to extreme close ups, Sharpness is still very much crucial, though the dilution of the focus, has to be quite soft. This enables the actors of the characters to not appeal flawed (in their skin). The general factor in a good focus puller, does not always depend on the camera, but on how clear the observation of the focus puller is on terms of accuracy.

How do you feel you performed your roles on set? What were your strengths and what were any challenges you faced? 


I think that my roles on both films, could have been preformed much better. I saw my roles on set as an learning experience, to acknowledge my weaknesses, if I were to work on these roles and even others, if I decide to work in the film industry. On ‘the worst kind of people’ I was a focus puller. The head of the day,  mentioned that ‘I relied numerously on the monitor to make sure that shots were in focus , and was not actually focusing shots on camera.’ Although, the 1st Camera Operator, was completely capable of focus pulling, I could have assisted better, in case the camera automatically went out of focus. If it was on a wider production scale, my job may have been more useful, but it is important to not transfer the same skills.

In my contrasted role, as project manager, I personally did not do a bad job, in my opinion, though I do wish that I received feedback. The main thing I would highlight, is working with my team more. I was able to complete tasks, without going over budget and also provided all the required equipment, with the help of others. Though, I took production, as a singular project, as I was the only person on production. If it were on a wider screen, where the film is to be projected to a wider audience, I would have to be able to co-operate on my team, more evenly to bring the best creative side, possible.


Following completion of the Film Academy, please give examples of film production skills that you would like to develop. Did you have any particular strengths or weaknesses on the course? 

My main weakness, is to work on teams. I prefer independence and to be behind the scenes, but the film industry truly values teamwork. In a film, there are so many building blocks that make the house of the film. If no one is able to work in a team, it causes unnecessary conflict and so, it may cause the film to not continue to work in production. Hence, a bust.

I think that it is important to evaluate your weaknesses and work on them. The only things we can do with strength is refine them, so we become stronger.

A strength, I tend to possess, is my honesty. Honesty in the film industry is a skill that some may overlook, but has value. The reason is, it helps to enlighten ideas and objectively rationalise them, in case it may not fully work in the future editing of the film. If the actors could act the role more genuinely, that is something important to address, as it may help film production and also means that actors, may be casted more roles,if full potential is being shown. Each component of the film has to be open to opinion, as opinions can aspire to refine and improve on subjects that are being acted upon ; an opinion would not cause harm, but it will help cause improvements.

Why is teamwork important when working on a film production?


In the film industry, to make a great film requires a great team. Even the term, ‘independent film’ is quite ironic, in terms of team work, everyone part of the film is working collaboratively. When a film is being planned for production, the team will be able to ensure that scenes are do-able and will cause a mountain of issues, during shoot and post production, as everyone will have to agree on the affirmed idea. Each team in every department, work together to produce a masterpiece. This is when an idea, faces enhancement as each interpretation by each member is unique. This individual uniqueness results in a unique film, all the ideas will be blended into one. Even, in the art department, the idea is transferred and it up to the art crew, to make props that show the main aesthetic of the film well, but also is not too predictable and remains in-tact to the plot. The great thing with the art department is that creativity is submerged, especially when the film is fantastical. When the film is purely fantasy based, the unique ideas unifying, draws the audience very well,

Tim Burton is truly a genius, with his extremely distinct artistry, in the films he directs. But, it is to say, that the artwork in the modern Lewis Carroll adaptation, the art department truly excelled. The characters were humanly cast, yet the art work truly minimised that element to make them appeal that they came from a fairy tale. Work like this, could come from one person, but these masterpieces, from the scenery to the costumes, would have most likely have been a collaborative piece.

When it also comes to post production, the editing team have to work together to make sure the best shots are being put together, to ensure that there will be more positive feedback.

How did you develop good working relationships with your crew members? Give examples


The main thing I would say that I developed is my interaction and expression of ideas. This was very prevalent during the editing process. When choosing the shots, the background music, I ha to be able to measure which shots were the most useful and how these shots could make a more dramatic and ominous effect. since, it was a team effort, I made sure that my interpretation was spoken of to my partner, to make sure that they saw the shot in another perspective and vice versa. Since, we were able to work well, as both our ideas became unified (as we both agreed on certain shots) made the editing process much quicker,.


Were there any problems you needed to overcome? Give examples

Before actually editing, I made an assumption that the person I was working with may have not been serious or would have played around during the editing process. If this were to happen, we would not have gotten any editing done and the ideas would have been prolonged until the next month. On the day, my prejudgement, did change and since this person was actually willing to work in a team, the process moved very smoothly. It is important to have prejudgement, to make possible considerations for any events, though it is important to rely on them, especially when you do not know the person. If the person is not very open-minded, it could cause unnecessary conflict in the pair and henceforth, the assigned role may be done to the best of your ability.

Luckily for myself, I was able to push off the prejudgement very quickly, due to an open mind.


What qualities are needed to work well with others on a film production?

TI believe that the team must consist of honesty. When working on a film piece, there is higher chance that games do not want to be played, as the more time you leave for the three stages of production, there would be a domino effect, in terms of promotion and scalability. Even during production, all opinions must be portrayed honestly , whether or not the team take it lightly, it is not to hurt anyone but to help improve the who project.

Equality :   

In a team, all roles should be shared equally and all tasks should be done at the same rate and quality. If one team member had work completed at excellent standards in contrast to another team member, it would require more time for the other team members to fixate the quality of the pieces, hence the schedule for the film may be delayed.

At the same time, work that is being made should not be taken credit by another member, nor should it be thought of. This may separate the team, as the reward is not being awarded justly.  A good team member takes appropriate credit, but would never think of taking credit for someone else’s work.

An important characteristic of effective work teams is the shared capacity. Every member has areas of strength and some weak spots. A good team would be able to provides  unique skills and/or knowledge that move the team forward, as each strength and weakness than one team member will have will the team member’s opposite.

As we can see in the diagram, there are four sectors that sum up the film’s quality.

All directing roles (and production) lie under the production team. The most famous role that would happen to be included in the team, is the Director. The director has the ultimate responsibility  to maintain the creative vision and overall style of a feature film.  These people would supported by a number of Assistant Directors, who ensure that the Director’s artistic ambitions are achieved during the filming process, by providing logistical, organisational and time-management support.

These artistic ambitions are reached, with the help of the art department. The Art department is crucial, as they would assist in bring the visual perception on a 3-D platform, whether through props or immense costumes. They are bringing the creative sector of a film into life. Although, the art department, may differ on the type of film, creativity is always being expressed. The art department on an live action film, would be expressed through outfits of characters and buildings. The art department on an animated film, would be the animator department. The art department can also include visual special effects, which would be filmed by the camera team. The camera team plays responsibility in quality filming. High resolution is important, as a film without a greater visual quality would not appeal to the audience. How the creativity is seen , is through the camera lens. Without, a good camera team, we can not truly see the value in the film. but a good camera team, can help emphasise on better audio. Audio is another key factor in a great film. This is where we are use our ears to truly understand the reasoning of the way a voice sounds or a specific effect takes place in a scene and so, it is the sound department, to ensure that each sound is clearly recorded, through boom operators and sound recorders. If all goes to plan, it will be edited to incorporate the most suitable scenes that clearly express the message that is wanting to be played across. It may eventually be adverted for people to see.

  1. Film festivals

Film festivals act as a gateway to truly showcase an aspiring worker in the film industry, through their creative lens. Many independent film groups use festivals as an opportunity is to gain true criticism and cause the opinion of the viewer to be completely unbiased. By receiving feedback, it will help a worker in film enhance their skills, to have a greater grasp of connecting with their creative side.


2. University

The reason I am deciding to talk about university is that, university is not always the true highlight of someone wanting to work into the industry, some want to go straight into the industry to gain first hand experience. Though, going to a university or specialised film school will actually challenge the person and help to have connections with other creative mindsets. It help to maintain an open mind, as the transition to working with contrasting creative people will cause a link to think outside the box. If we are not challenged in every way, we cannot grow. Growth is individual. sometimes, working may be best for others, but those who decide to understand the concept of film, academically is a great thing.




What is the wider creative media sector? (think about music, costume, advertising, animation, theatre, games etc)

I would say that the wider creative media sector, is a refined structure of expressing ideas in an objectively creative medium through sub-genres. They would usually include sounds, pictorials and a format to profess talent.


1: Television – News, Drama, Documentary, Comedy, and Music. News may be a surprise to others as being creative, but in reality, it is actually expressing how our society is through the expression of words used to creative an emotional atmosphere, but news has its own biases that can be used against its creative choice of becoming a bringer of ‘bad news; the news itself may be controversial but the purpose of the news is not.
Film: Features, Documentaries, Bollywood, and Specialist
Print:Posters, Flyers, and Books

Books are the most prominent medium for this type of creativity. When a book receives stellar reviews, this sector becomes easily transferable into posters and possible promotion for the fans of the novel, to watch a film adaptation and correlation their own visualisations with the directors.

Games : Fantasy and Action

Radio: Music, Talk, Drive-time, Soap operas

Interactive : Advertising and Marketing:

Structure is the way that the media industries are grouped together and form media sectors.

Explain how film production connects to the wider creative media sector

I would like to expand on film, on the basis of an adaptation. When a book becomes adapted to a film, the creative elements of a book will be abridged, not to dilute the authenticity but to portray the directors true reflection of how the film may be. When a film completely mirrors the book, it looses its touch and doesn’t show anything entertaining to those who have not read the book and to those who have, all it will show is a clearer view of how characters may appear. It will therefore lack artistry, so it is important to highlight the key events in the book’s plot . If highlighted correctly, the promotion creative sector such as flyers and other promotion forums will start to come into play. Through distribution and marketing, we are connecting the wider industry, as  Feature films are distributed through cinema and big festival and award shows.

What is it like working in the film industry?

 I would not say that the film industry is something that comes easy to some people. As a more imaginative introvert, doing the most practical duties can be quite stressful. Though, there is more to the film industry than everyone expects, if you do not happen to work in the industry already. It is not just about pointing the camera to very good ‘imitators’ for the entertainment of others, it is immensely more than that. so much time and effort goes into actually making the production. The crews are quite colossal, even the allocation of 10 to carry out roles on a short film is way too small, so much creation comes from each department. The director has a picture in mind and tries to find people who would express the idea, in a way that seems suitable to them. An alternative would be the writer of the script, finding people to fulfil the idea. Other than that, there are so many roles for each individual and all roles are crucial, whether you are directing or focus pulling, production management or part of the art department, editing or sound, without the crucial components of the team, it will be more problematic for the true goal to be reached. That goal would be making the film and completing it with success. The film industry depends on team work. It can not all be done by one person, even films with one actor. The sound has to be in check, the focus has to be sharp, the props required must be suitable for said scene. The jobs are quite lengthy, sometimes even tedious. That is to say, if you do not have the passion or perseverance to work in film, you should not do it. Directing sounds very pretentious to everyone; it shows success. From Wes Anderson, to Guillermo Del Toro, who wouldn’t want to be proud and say, I have won x academy awards and I will seem cool and make money. These directors worked very intensely to get where they are today and if there is no propensity, you can not make it and you should not consider doing it.


Give 10 examples of qualities you need to work in the film industry

  1. Perseverance-To never give up as many say. Perseverance is quite key,as it very rare to start a career in film and suddenly be on the top, whether acting or directing. There will be times that some films will not have a successful outcome , or if you are acting, you will not always get the role , that you aspire for. If you give up before the first hurdle, so much dreams would go into landfill and never be seen again. Every piece of hard work counts but the only thing that keeps one working is if they never give up.

2. Organisation: It is important to always have a set plan on what is required to doing each day of each scene or what exercises are required to improve acting. If there is a lack of organisation, the film lacks the chance of reaching great potential. No one will be aware of what they are doing and hence, the crew will not be able to work their best. It is important to have a schedule and shot list, to complete the film in time and maintain crew synchronisation.

3. Independence-Although you do require team work, you also have to sometimes take initiative if the crew is not as organised so it does not create a domino effect on the whole team. The domino effect can push back deadlines which is not an issue to aspire to deal with. Make sure that you don’t always rely on the team, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t trust your team, but don’t use the team as you backbone of duties.

4. An open mind- This does greatly stand out to directors and camera operators. This is the due to fact that only sticking to shot lists or certain ideas that you may have created from the script can always be improved and refined, that even includes excluding certain actions and even improvising. If everything appeals real and thematic to the film’s element, it can be perceived well to the audience and no one will know… With camera operators, the shot list is a great guide, but until it is actually been filmed, we can not say which shot is best. This means that if a scene, requires an extreme close up and it doesn’t seem natural, don’t use it! change it while you can. Editing can only do so much.

5. Punctuality- Always be on time, no matter which role is being played, whether key or supporting. If there a persistence in tardiness, it really pushes back schedule which can affect the ending of shooting and post production.

6. Communication-Communication acts as a gate way to share ideas and motives for the actual. This is important as it can make or break a film, but it can also provide networks  for people to gain opportunities. Though, if someone lacks communication, many opportunities may be lost and conflict can be caused, if no one corresponds as a team.

7. Team work- Yes, I did put independence on the list, but the film industry is a collaborative industry, so if no one can work in a collaborative space, to create a film will not work, in terms of creation, because not everyone may agree.

8. Creation- Creation is the root to a good film, Creation is the key point of making each film be unique, even if they are in the same genre. If an idea, is not creative enough, in the sense that it isn’t unique, the movie may be type casted and would not play a legendary effect in future aspirations.

9. Assertiveness- You should not be afraid in explaining to people, how the job should be carried out, if not done correctly. If equipment is not handled correctly, it should be said so, each part is crucial and if one piece of equipment breaks, it may increase shooting duration, as it will need to be replaced. Though, when being assertive, it should be in a professional manner to the work can be continued.

10. A set goal: All the requirements above, will have no purpose if there is not a set goal. The goal has to be clear, concise and doable in the time that you have given for shooting and post production. If there is no set goal, the work is towards nothing and the success of everything else, no matter how great the film may be, will fail.

Why is time management important in the film industry? 

 The first thing we should do is to acknowledge what time management is. It is more than just ‘managing time.’ phrasing it as that, makes it seem very boring, but time management is a very valuable conceptual trait that can influence the work of other people, depending on your personality. If you work well with people or not ,it can still influence people to want to be like ‘you’ in this form. An actual definition (from the various worded definitions) would be ‘the ability to use one’s time effectively or productively, especially at work.’   If we were to highlight each part of the phrase, we will be able to conclude why it is important in a place like the ‘film industry.’

  1. ‘Ability’

It is a capability, or some sort of proficiency that we, as humans are able to all possess. Some say it is a talent, but in this context, it will be kind of flawed, everyone has the ability to manipulate time, in a scheduled form, but some prefer it more to others. in a place like film, we must be able to adapt a way to manipulate time, even though it may not seem natural. Being punctual, keeping on film schedule, allows the other colleagues on all production sets, whether pre-production-, shooting and post production to all work together and better on the collaborative project. Though, as I said before, we all have the ability to ‘manage’ and manipulate time, which means each person in the team, has to participate in doing that. As a result it may maximise and enhance the project and production process. One thing to note, even if we can manipulate time, and become punctual, time management, is mainly valid when it is used effectively.

Using time effectively

  • Time, can be easily wasted, due to procrastination or the delay of other colleagues, or even not having the willpower to complete a task. This does happen to everyone, including directors and screenwriters, even editors. Ineffective time can fall into postponing schedules and delay film release, on a greater scale that is. It can be hard to escape that loop, since time in this case, can not be controlled. Though the best way to use time effectively, is understand the concept of each plan properly and not schedule many tasks into a short amount of time, small steps in large spaces, can produce a art piece will more people can value, because they are able to pick out the significant parts to form a whole opinion on the project created.

At work.

The film industry, is a work environment. Each role that outlines the industry, requires effective time management. Even the most minute roles need to have effective time management, it increases general group productivity and in fact, IT will make the people have a greater reputation, It may even cause a quicker promotion ranking in the industry.

Describe the key aspects of health and safety when working on film productions 


Health and Safety, can realistically make or break a film. If there is a lack of health and safety, unnecessary conflict can take place. I shall give an example: An independent, director casts a famous actor for a thriller film. On set, their budget is wisely spent on props, planning, sets etc. and each person is paid fairly, depending on their role to the film. But they forget to hire a health and safety team, experts in ensuring that everything on set is risk free and to ensure that a risk assessment is put in place. There is a scene being shot, where the actor has to fall from a building. There are no stunt double. This results in the actor doing the stunt, and injuring their neck severely. This causes the actor to sue the team, and since the director is independent, and is not world-renowned as of yet, they can not  afford to continue the film any further, signifying the director’s dream has come to an end and is left with debt.

Healthy and Safety, on a film set has to be thoroughly carried out. A Risk assessment has to be made, as it will act as a way to stay safe when there are different requirements for each shooting set up or location, as it will be all individually based and so, the risks as need to be highlighted. It entails the identifications of  all the possible hazards as well as evaluate the risks of the set. It would be a great tip to place safeguards, to minimise the risk hence, it will save shooting time.

We (I) did not learn anything in our editing class with ‘Tom.’ specifically about the copyrighting laws, but during editing, He acted as a very informative and knowledgeable guide about the editing environment and the process, which I happened to be very enlightened in. He is , therefore a really great editor and I will not throw him under the bus for not mentioning ‘copyright laws,’ unless I was not present when he mentioned them.  But, if that was the case, he did not mention them, and so I can not summarise this piece.

Why does copyright law exist?


Copyright law, is basically a law that is passed amongst many media settings to prevent the copying of original artwork without the permission of the creator. This can be through music, filming, art pieces etc. The person who owns the piece has the right to allow certain people to use their pieces,as long as the people do not claim it as their own work, and ensures that they are credited for it.

What might happen if you were to use copyrighted material in your film?


It is best ,before using copyrighted material, to ask for permission before actually using created content. It can be expensive, but it can best to play safe. Though, not everyone can afford to pay for copyright, so If copyrighted material were to be used in the film. the created piece has to be clearly acknowledge, to present that is it foreign created work. The work could be taken down.

For example: Ryan Higa (YouTuber NigaHiga) is a very known YouTuber, mainly for his skits and creatively states phrases in his skit videos, as an inside joke for the times that went through copyright infringement. Around 2006-2007, He would upload videos which would receive a massive amount of views, due to its comedic creativity, but he would add music in them, without any sort of permission of accreditation to the musician or artist. He broke copyright law and so, those YouTube Videos were taken down. For him to continue creating content, he had to ensure that music he would use was either his own or no copyrighted music.

How can you make sure not to infringe copyright law in your film?

Copyright infringement is ‘ the use of works protected by copyright law without permission, infringing certain exclusive rights granted to the copyright holder, such as the right to reproduce, distribute, display or perform the protected work, or to make derivative works.’ as credited by Wikipedia (see what I did there?) . It is a dangerous act to do in the media world, you could get sued for a high amount of money, for infringing someone else’s work. To avoid this, the artist or company would need to be accredited, through the script or in the credits. But, on a larger scale film, it would be best to ask for permission and pay a feasible commission to the creator, to prevent them from suing the movie company.

How has copyright law affected your film production?

In the film spaghetti, the couple was seen using a couple of ‘sainsbury’s’ bags to present that they came back from shopping. If sainsbury’s were to see our short film, as we did not ask for permission to use it, they would have right to sue us. Though, we decided to improvise a short sentence , in the script on the day, to acknowledge ‘Sainsbury’s’ the company to avoid infringement and possible sue.
